OUR STORY
The story of "Peninsula Hacienda El Tesorito" started a few years back when, at the time of pandemic, we came into a possession of an olive grove near Ronda. At the time we were not looking to start a business, ability to have a small quantity of extra virgin olive oil for personal consumption was a welcome addition to opportunity to live in the heart of Ronda region, which we embraced with all our hearts.
Over the years that followed we have learned how to take care of our olive grove throughout the year, how to improve the harvest, how to collect olives and, of course, how to turn them into good quality oil. The name of our brand "Hacienda El Tesorito" is the one of discovery, opportunity and purpose. Discovery - of good quality fruit (olive), opportunity - to turn it into a quality product, purpose - of sharing this product with you.
LECHÍN
The origins of Lechín variety of olive go back to antiquity. During the times of Roman Empire Andalucia became one of the largest producers of olive oil, which was exported throughout the Empire. The word “lechín” derives from Spanish word “leche” (milk) and refers to white colour of its sap. Lechín was mainly cultivated in Seville, Cordoba, Cadiz, Antequera and Granada regions of Andalucia. It developed well in those regions primarily due to its resistance to droughts, olive leaf spot fungus, olive fruit fly, and good adaptability to unfavourable soils.
Lechín de Sevilla (a variety of our olive oil) is known to flower and ripen early. Lechín’s medium sized oval shaped fruit turns from green to purple and back colour when it is ready to harvest. Harvesting is preceded by careful and meticulous process of taking weekly sample to check evolution of the fruit. Timing of harvest is also related to weather conditions. Cloudy but not rainy days are optimal for harvesting Lechín, so neither heat nor humidity may change the quality of the oil. Our olives are harvested by hand and immediately transported to the Molino Felix Mill in Ronda for pressing.
